The Castle Point Wildlife Group is a local registered charity run by volunteers who are passionate about the ancient coppice woodlands they look after.
There are 2 local forests that they sympathetically manage:North Benfleet Hall Wood which consists of 11 acres of woodland with some natural ponds. North Benfleet Hall Wood was awarded Green flag status in 2012 which has been retained in subsequent years.West Wood in Benfleet, located off the Rayleigh Road is the largest site of around 80 acres of ancient coppice woodland. The group were granted a licence to manage the woods after a campaign was set up when they were put up for sale by the church. The local council stepped in and purchased the woods and the group now actively manage the trees and other woodland aspects to ensure its beauty for generations to come.Scarlett Fireplaces have been lucky enough to be invited to West Wood to help experiment with wood log processing and delivery. The quality of the hardwood logs that are sourced from West Wood are the best you will find and can be delivered direct from the woods by the wildlife group who fully understand the correct log supply process to ensure good quality, dry wood fuel for your wood burning stove. Some wood is too good to be used as fuel. West Wood has an abundance of mighty oak trees. As part of the groups management projects, there are times when some of the dominant oaks need to be felled to allow sunlight to the woodland floor. Scarlett Fireplaces were involved in a project to first slice the oaks and later create some beautiful natural wood furniture.
